Job Summary:
The person hired for the position of Principal Electrical Engineering Specialist will lead the product development team in the adoption and use of best practices, design methodologies, and plans. Accomplishes highly complex and challenging projects and other work activities under the minimal direction of a manager, and is a team lead for more junior engineers.
This position provides an opportunity to transition from other private, public, government or military environments to a 3M career.
Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Identify, plan, recommend, and complete technical programs leading to innovative applications and extensions of existing and new technologies that have impact to the organization
Perform electrical schematic design, circuit simulations, and multi-layer PCB layouts
Lead risk management activities to ensure design and process shortcomings are identified and appropriately addressed
Conduct low noise, small signal manipulation (amplifying, filtering, scaling, converting, A/D, D/A), and microcontroller peripheral circuit design
Conduct advanced design development and analysis of analog, digital and power circuits including 12-24 bits ADCs, 8/16/32bit ??Ps and ??Cs, displays, sensors interface, AC/DC power switching, linear and switching power supplies.
Exercise system knowledge of embedded hardware and firmware design
Oversee the layout of printed circuit boards for products using CAD and custom design rules.
Select and specify electronic and electrical components based on function, cost, availability, reliability, etc. for the use in the products manufactured
Provide written technical specifications in a clear and unambiguous fashion
Guide interactions with customers to better understand customer's processes and applications
Provide technical consultation with external partners
Communicate results of assigned and self-initiated technical tasks to respective business groups and/or technical communities
Apply knowledge of DOE, FMEA, tolerance analysis, simulation, DVP&R methodology, statistical methods, and DFM to improve robustness and quality of electronic design
Basic Qualifications:
Possess a Bachelor's degree or higher in a science or engineering discipline (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution
Minimum seven (7) years of combined experience in one or more of the following areas: electrical schematic design, circuit simulations, multi-layer PCB layouts, embedded hardware and firmware design, and/or electrical system applications in a private, public, government or military environment
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university
Strong leadership, interpersonal, and teamwork affinity - willing to mentor junior engineers on the team. Assists in the development of other technical employees
Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and meet critical deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the capability of producing innovative electrical and system solutions. Experience with design simulation and analysis tools. Experience with statistical tolerance analysis
Demonstrated success using lean techniques, DFSS, Kaizen, CTQs, PLM, balanced scorecards, DFMEA. DFSS green belt or LEAN certification
Advanced user of Altium design tools
Design experience in the following areas: Analog, RF, and digital circuit design, battery powered embedded systems, high reliability/robust environments
RF design experience (ZigBee, Bluetooth, RFID and Wi-Fi) and knowledge of RF test equipment including spectrum analyzers and signal generators.
Proficient in Design for Manufacturing, Assembly, Test, and Usability methodologies
Demonstrated knowledge designing robust systems to meet or exceed large temperature fluctuations, vibration and drop tests, EMI/ESD and regulatory testing requirements
Demonstrated ability to represent the company professionally (internal and external Contacts)
Internal Contacts: Peer Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Test Engineering, Test Technicians, Project Managers, Quality Engineers, and manufacturing team
External Contacts: Materials Suppliers, Component Vendors, Regulatory Agencies
Experience designing and developing embedded electronic systems for commercial, Industrial, and/or military products
Experience working in a geographically diverse development organization with multi-disciplinary teams
Experience reviewing and/or generating intellectual property including patents, trade secrets, etc.
Experience designing electronics to comply with FCC / IC, UL, CSA, ATEX and IECEx, Hazardous Location Circuit Design (Intrinsic Safety), and SIL
Proficient with MS Office software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)
Excellent English-based technical writing and verbal skills
Location: Monroe, NC
Travel: May include up to 25% domestic/international
Relocation: Is authorized
